A Psychological Study of the Impact of Cultural Barriers on Pastoral Counseling Effectiveness in Buguma City, Nigeria

Obugheni Police Ukwoma · EIBCS2526P012 · June 2026
El-Elyon International Bible College, submitted to El-Elyon Seminary

Setting: the 39 Polo of Buguma City, Asari-Toru LGA, Rivers State, a Kalabari cultural setting.

Method: descriptive survey of pastoral counselors and congregants in PFN and CAN churches. Sample of 407 respondents (53.1% female, 46.9% male) using the Taro Yamane formula; questionnaire and interview guide; Multicultural Counseling Theory and African Psychology.

Summary of findings

  • Cultural beliefs, including riverine water-deity worship, were associated with a preference for traditional help over pastoral counseling.
  • Stigma, respect for elders and fear of community disclosure reduced willingness to open up to counselors.
  • Preference for tradition shaped how legitimate counseling was seen when it conflicted with custom.
  • Language mattered: respondents found it easier to express deep feelings in Kalabari than in English.
  • Overall, cultural barriers had a statistically significant effect on perceived counseling effectiveness. The study measured perceptions and help-seeking, not church attendance or clinical outcomes.

Recommendations

Use Kalabari for emotional disclosure, train counselors in multicultural competence, involve respected elders as bridge-builders, provide confidential spaces, and document indigenous coping alongside pastoral care.
